This book profiles Black individuals who settled in Thurston County between 1950 and 1975 and tells the stories of their migration into the area long after the settlement of Tumwater by Black Pioneer George Bush and his family in 1843. Little is known or written about Blacks who lived her for the 100 years that followed. While many things changed over the years, many things remained the same. The stories told here help the reader to understand who were these Black people, where did they come from, what brought them here, and what challenges did they face, and what had life been like for them? Their stories share a rich history for this quarter-century of time, knowing there are many more narratives to capture since 1975, but the process to add to the Black history of this area had to start somewhere and did so with those who were living or who were living or who still had family in the area. And so... this book begins to serve that purpose and other editions and books will continue to be added as time goes on.
